The ROI story of Hogenhouck

Have you ever wondered about the Return on Investment (ROI) of a job application process? At Velde, we look beyond the signed employment contract and therefore ask about the ROI for our clients and professionals.

Mark van Beusekom, Managing Director of Hogenhouck m&a, hired Edwin Lips as Director of Business Development last year. This is Hogenhouck’s ROI story.

What expectations did you have beforehand?

We assist entrepreneurs in buying, selling and funding their businesses. Here, my co-managing partner is primarily involved in the initial contacts and I am more on the deal side; executing the mandates. With this set-up we as an office build a personal bond with our clients, before, during and after a transaction. A unique approach in our market. As we continue to grow, we decided last year to invest in a Business Development team. The vacancy for Director Business Developer was the first important step in that.

During the recruitment process, Edwin set expectations quite high in what he could do in this profession. It is a difficult profession, where you have to have a lot of patience. We chose him because in terms of personality he would fit well with our organization, he has sales experience and dares to bring his personality to the table.

What is the reality like?

Over the past year, Edwin has exceeded my expectations and probably had to temper his own expectations a bit. He has had to find a balance of depth with the entrepreneur and not putting too much focus on the deal, then the right time for the mandate will come.

You have to be patient in this business. We are realistic about that. We see that Edwin has potential, understands internal interaction and can buffalo. The current team supports him and appreciates Edwin as a person. He has really found his place in our organization.

Things are certainly moving in the right direction. He has already scored a number of mandates and is starting to become an interesting interlocutor for entrepreneurs. It hasn’t been easy this past year. A lot had to be invented because we are building a new structure. That always comes in phases, which makes it bere-spanning.

What is your Return of Investment?

We see this as a long-term investment. A year is still a bit short for that. If this works out exactly as we envisioned it, the new Business Development team will represent enormous value for Hogenhouck. We will be in control of the entire customer journey. That has been our approach from the beginning. It gives us an independent position, where we can determine our own future. Instead of waiting to see what deals come our way, we can choose the sectors we want to delve into.

A year from now, Edwin will have grown even more in his role and will be able to reap the rewards of his hard work. Putting the structure in place in his new team is quite complicated, but is going to bring Hogenhouck a lot. We are convinced of that.
